Pacman cupcake cake

A good friend of ours, Troy, (a classmate of Chris') invited us to his "birthday party" on Saturday night. I put it in quotations because the phrase sounds so elementary for a gathering of adults hanging out and socializing, but a birthday party it was.

When Chris first told me about the party I immediately had him ask Troy if I could bring the cake. Troy was slightly hesitant to say okay because he planned to have about 40 people there and was afraid it would be too much (he just planned to make cupcakes.) Me, knowing 40 people isn't that many, told him not to worry Chris and I could handle the task. Then I began my mission of what exactly we would make. Out of the blue it hit him me. A Pacman cake!!! You see, there used to be a Mrs. Pacman arcade game in the student lounge at school and we always used to find Troy playing it at lunch and during breaks. The idea was just to good to pass up.

So began my quest to conquer a cake made of cupcakes.

The preliminary planning stage. I needed to know exactly how many cupcakes this was going to take.

After the cupcakes were baked (and cooled) we then set them up as we arranged before. Since we were going to be traveling with the cake to Troy's house, we glued down the outside cupcakes with frosting to avoid slipping and sliding on the car ride over. Then began the task of frosting the cake. Chris helped pipe the frosting out and I spread it as evenly as possible over the cupcakes. It was a little harder than I expected, but only because I made the frosting VERY thick so it wouldn't fall between the cupcakes. Next time I think I will thin it a little and it will still be fine.

Pacman then needed an eye for finishing touches.

Chris rolled out some fondant I had and cut out the ghosts. Of course at this point they still needed eyes.

I proudly present Pacman (and the ghosts)!!

Troy loved his cake and so did all his friends. At first everyone thought we bought it from a bakery, but Troy proudly made an announcement to tell everyone it was made with love by the Shamlians. Just seeing how happy Troy was to get his cake made all the time and energy we put into it all worth it.

I seriously need to get some cake-advice from you. I want to make Sosi's cake for her birthday, but might need a consultation from the Cake Whisperer beforehand.
